Maybe it's just me but Toonies look naked on the obverse since the maple leaf that was on the top is no longer there.
I have often wondered why the date placement seems to always change from top to bottom? I can see having dual dates commemorating something but switching up the position of the dates is baffling to me.

I have an album for $2 coins with the coins visible from both sides. With most of my other collections I display with the head side down and other side up with the date visible.
Most $2 coins have the date on the head side so I never know which side to show face up. I could display all coins with dates up too, and then I'd have a mish-mash as sometimes the dates are reverse side, some obverse side with the $2 coin.

by definition the reigning monarch is on the front of the coin, so I always place the monarch on the front of my pages.

This is just one example, there are others but this is what I am talking about.

The HMS Shannon is offset to make a third that year. In 2012 They made the security style of maple leaf and saw no need to have it on both sides. I too noticed that newer years have it only on the reverse. I'm sure it was just designers choice.

To me, the date definitely looks better on the bottom.
How one displays their coins is completely up to the individual. My personal display preference Is to show the reverse, as that side of the con is more interesting to me. Some people think this is backwards, and I respect their right to think that.

Quote: I got a few more toonies in the mail today. Getting close to finishing the series with just 7 more to go!! Good for you! Are going after, or do you have the 2003W and the 1996-2006 with the date on the bottom?

Way to go! You're almost done! I began a toonie album one rainy day when my grandson was visiting. We initially started out by roll hunting, it was great fun. I also bought from ebay what we couldn't find. But then some of the new MS made the others that were worn look old and dingy, and some upgrading began. All and all it was entertaining and it's interesting to observe how many different versions were issued in the 20 years since they made their first appearance.

I was a coin collector when the Toonies came out but assumed they would be boring and useless to collect as they were "modern". So I did not bother. As I was collecting all the other denominations of Canadian coins I decided to collect them four years ago by picking through change. I bought a few also as needed and it has not been as boring as I thought! Maybe not boring at all!

I've got all the 2006 varieties. As for the 2003W, I don't but I am considering buying the PL set just because I'll need the other coins later. Quote: Good for you! Are going after, or do you have the 2003W and the 1996-2006 with the date on the bottom?

It's quite a satisfying series to collect. I remember seeing a toonie for the first time when I was in Ontario, Canada pre 9/11. Same for loonies for that matter. Quote:Way to go! You're almost done! I just bought the last remaining 6 toonies I needed from ebay. I am guessing it will be close to 2 weeks before they arrive. Maybe I will start working on my loonies next...
