What I find interesting is how the reverse says "silver medal", yet this looks more bronze to me--is that patina?

And I just gotta say...Pacific NW natives don't remotely look like the guy obviously styled after a plains warrior.
And it's usually a bit chilly to canoe bareback through the straights.

I do like this medal...it really captures the style of the period.

The Gold medal is made of the same composition as the silver. Reckon the Comission was on a budget.

Would these medals have been awards, like a blue ribbon at the county fair, therefore the composition doesn't match...?

Yes, these are award medals. The rectangle space on the reverse is where the name would be engraved. The two I have where never awarded to anyone.

Very cool, and very nice pictures, by the way.
