All of my BCA coins have arrived; I purchased UNC examples of each.
Two main comments:
1) I am not a fan of multi-coin commemorative programs that use the same design on all of the coins. Multiple mints in Europe have used this approach - I'm disappointed that the US Mint has been forced to follow suit because of Congress' mandate. I didn't like it with the Baseball Hall of Fame coins and I'm less than enthused here. I very much wish the program had used different designs on each denomination to highlight various perspectives on BCA.
2) My gold coin does not look very pink. Compared to rose gold jewelry, the coin hardly looks pink at all. In addition to the less than robust color, it also appears to be a bit uneven, with some areas of the coin appearing a bit more pink than others. Subtle is the best way I can describe the pink color.
Thanks for your opinion commems. I've been going back and forth on this trying to decide if the modern was worth it or not. At least for the gold, I think I'd rather spend the money on completing my classic commemoratives.
As is the case with many of the moderns, it looks like the BCA coins are a bit uninspiring in their mint state versions. IMHO, the contrast between frosted and brilliant surfaces make the proofs look better, which is why I collect the proofs.
I don't yet have either the proof dollar (ordered a PR69DCAM from Bullion Exchanges on an ebay bucks promotion) or proof half eagle (I guess it will still be called that, even though the Au content is lacking) but have seen photographs of them that look better than the pictures of the mint state coins that commems posted. Here's a youtube video of an unboxing if you're interested...
I picked up the $5 proof and have to agree with Commems on the color. To me you get that little bit of pink hue in dimmer light and at a little distance but in bright light close up it looks gold. At least that's how I see it.
Didn't even think to check until you asked JBuck. Side by side there is quite a difference. On it's own you don't really notice too much but side by side.........wow.
Just got back from the Whitman Baltimore show (pretty dead, nearly half the tables were empty. This past week's east coast snow storm really hit at a bad time). Got to see the BCA coins in person at the Mint's booth. I will say that the proof $5 looks really nice in person. Definitely will be picking up a PCGS graded version at some point
I know that BadDog and OMXFL did the math on the $5 gold and came up with a gold weight of .21674 and I completely agree with this but have yet to see it anywhere in "writing". Not one site that I have seen gives a gold weight on this coin, they only give a total weight.
What's the big secret? Has anyone seen this in print at all? Anywhere? We all know it, I just would like to see it admitted somewhere.
