I know why, but does anyone else know why this Buffalo nickel sold for so much? I will give hints if needed.

Is it because it is the 2 feather variety?

Thanks Pennypusher. I'll have to admit that I didn't know they sometimes bring this much of a premium. I don't have the book on them. Do you collect these?

On the obverse where the large feather comes down there should be 2 feather tips showing between this feather and the indian's neck. Die polishing removed these 2 feathers. It is similar to the 3 legged buffalo. This is found on different dates. There are collectors studying these and assembling sets.

Do you think the seller knew it was the two feather variety? Or does he think that all 1917-S Buffs will bring this price?

Pyrbob,
I have been looking for the two feathers variety lately, but I'm not sure what kind of premium they are worth. I put a bid on this 17-s thinking the I could get a good deal on it. I was pretty shocked when it sold for 30 bucks more than what I bid on it. I hope to get a Buffalo nickel book listing prices for such varities soon. -PP

wow! I learn something new everyday on this forum...I had no clue that there was a "2 feather" variety, nor did I know that it was collectible...I guess I should look more carefully at my Buffalo nickels =)
