I am new and don't know if this is the right spot for this, but I hope that you all can help a newbie out.

I have been wanting to get some "junk silver" for a while now and don't know what is a fair price to pay. I only have one coin shop near by and I have got mixed reviews on them. I figure that the cost would depend on the spot price.

Also am I wrong in my thinking that a dime is a 1/10 ounce, a quarter a 1/4 ounce ect.ect.
Thanks in advance for all your help

ebay can sometimes be a good source of junk silver coins but mostly coin shops are the easiest as you will be paying for shipping online.

check Craigslist as well if you feel comfortable doing so.

all pre-1964 dimes, quarters, halves are 90% silver

I went to a coin shop today and they said that silver pre-64 is going at 6x-10x face value. If that is true on ebay, I'm unsure of but good luck to you. You could always hang out here, make some quality posts and then trade/sell what you don't want.

10x face and less is an excellent price to pay for silver right now as it's around 12-13 on average over the last few months.

Boy do I miss the $20 an ounce

Nope, you are overestimating the silver content

War Nickels - .05626 troy ounce
Dimes - .07234 troy ounce
Quarters - .18084 troy ounce
90% Half - .36169 troy ounce
40% Half - .14792 troy ounce
Dollar - .77344 troy ounce

My local shop is currently buying at 11x face and selling at 13x face

Silver is very cheap right now, buy if you can. I would suggest going to your so-so dealer and see if he is willing to come down on his scrap price a little(thay usualy are willing to). See what he is asking for War Nickels, since they are often priced well under melt. If you can get them for 65 cents or less you're getting a very good deal. When silver was $18 an ounce I found a guy selling them for 40 and 50 cents each! good luck, PP
