My wife has been collecting foreign coins for a very long time. She knows about as much as I do about them (which is little more than squat). If she sees one that she thinks looks neat, she buys it.
However we have been looking through them and there are some that I believe to be made of silver.
Is there a way to tell if they are or not?

You can search by country and year and get the KM number on the coin
then look at a pic. of it and get a list of it's value and if it is silver and how much silver. It will show in a column as ASW with a weight next to it if it is silver. ASW means actual silver weight.
It does not give a percentage of silver though as I have found out.
Many foreign silver coins run 50, 80 and 83 percent silver.
I just posted a question myself about belgian silver coins.

There are chemical tests to determine if objects are silver, but if the coins have any collector value, this is not a good idea.
Depending upon the mint dates and nation of origin, you can proceed in multiple ways.
If the list is not too big, use your computer to make a list, print it and go to the public library. They usually have copies in the reference section. Or you can go to local bookstore and get a copy of Krause. This is okay if you plan to continue. Note that Krause 'World Coins' are on a century boundary.So there are World Coins for 1800's, 1900's.

well they are not US coins per say. they are one dollar gaming tokens from casinos all in las vegas. one says excaluibur , las vegas nv 1990. |

they sound silver and they seem the same weight as my silver eagles ..about the same size as well ... any hints would be great

A souvenir token or "round" such as this, if it were really made of silver, would most likely have "1 ounce .999 fine" stamped on it somewhere. As for the general question of determining silver, check out this recent thread and this older thread. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
