There they are.....market acceptable cleaning.....now up to the OP to decide..... No one's telling him to buy it.....Buy it if you want to.

Since this is a type coin, these dates are going to be your best bet 42,46,47,59-o,60-o,71,and 72. I'm assuming your range is $500-$700, is that correct? |

Way to look out MikeF. I'm a fan of Sarasota numismatics, but I think coastcoins has the one in your price range locked....Also, buy from them too. IMO the 1843 is the best value hands down but it is a little out of your price range. MikeF advice to have some patience is spot on. You can buy market acceptable SLD's all day long. .

Dark and ugly doesn't mean better. Take of that what you will I don't have the energy for these fights anymore to actually describe what pictures do to things

Woke up this morning, got a cup of coffee and sat down to re-read all the comments and take another look at the coins that MikeF and DoctorBurnzy posted. After reading the above comment I firgured baseball21 might be talking about the 1860-O from Sarasota that I picked out and I very much appreciate his opinion. After looking at the pictures again I realized that it wasn't the best looking one but for some reason I have always liked those "darker" coins, and there is nothing wrong with that. So that tells me that I need to start looking at more of the SLD's and learn how to pick out the nicer looking ones. Again, Thanks to all for the opinions and advice and I hope you won't mind me posting a picture of SLD's that I find that I think has the correct look, but it's a learning process for me. |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course, but I think the original coin posted from ebay has more eye appeal than the above with the exception of the 1843. If the OP likes the original coin, I don't see any issues with buying it at that price. If price can be stretched a bit above $500, the 1843 is really nice also and probably worth stretching for a bit. |

Not the biggest fan of the one in the original post due to the color. Possibly cleaned a while ago, can't tell for certain. I'd go with one that has original surfaces, just my opinion.

I agree with Ken, the OP coin's eye appeal to me is only bested by the 1843 CAC. In the case of the SLDs and how many were unfortunately cleaned, I have a clear view that brighter (and clearly cleaned) is very ugly, whereas dark generally is not. Most of the "original" ones posted here in PCGS slabs are unattractive Because they have clearly been dipped or cleaned in the past and PCGS doesn't give a care.
Promoting the view that all dark coins are ugly has the potential to encourage future destruction of lovely original surfaces on these coins.

That's one of the things I was suggesting as well. The OP coin from how the picture was taken will very likely be a little darker and several of the links I didn't find any upgrade in eye appeal over the OP coin aside from the CAC one. Quote:

Never said all, just said that simply being dark doesn't make a coin original or attractive. Coins can be darkened, especially when you are talking about ones with a heavy "crust" for lack of a better word and that darkness of extreme toning can eventually destroy some of these coins after we are all gone. There are original coins that are both light and dark, but simply being dark doesn't mean original which is the trap that some fall into. Truth of the matter is original is nothing more than a look for most coins, lots of things can happen over 200 years that no one was tracking every step of the way. Nothing wrong with that fact, the important takeaways are to go for coins with nice surfaces with eye appeal. Those coins are the ones that continuously succeed. Nothing wrong with liking very heavy dark ones either as long as one understand how that plays in the current environment. At the end of the day buy what you like, just realize how your taste will impact things if it is different from market norms. No one says you have to follow the crowd, just don't pay premium prices for coins that the crowd wouldn't like Edited by basebal21
