I am sorry if this is not the corr ect place but I am VERY new to this. I love to coin roll hunt and have found MANY different coins (pennies(one cents), nickels, dimes and quarters) all of which have the same "D" shaped gouges in the coins. Often there are more than just one. NOT raised but it looks like the coins are "GOUGED" with little tools. I put tool*S* because although they are all the same of a mint mark, there are different sizes. I have been searching for MONTHS and have found NO information pertaining to this....and I have seen it HUNDREDS of times. Thank you and have a nice day& . *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Do you have any pictures? It would help if we could see what you're seeing.

They could be contact marks from the reeded edges of other coins.

"D" is the mintmark for the Denver mint. Maybe your coins were made in Denver?

That's called scratches and coin contact marks from circulation wear and tear. It's not an error. This cannot happen at the U.S. Mint. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD). It's only worth face value unfortunately.

Hey!! I just saw that the first time I typed it DID work.....Ignorant (well ......pertaining to THAT...LOL).NO MORE. DO back to my initial question as to what are those "D" shaped gouges. I have seen HUNDREDS of coins with them...all about the size of a mint mark but in different sizes. I understand the coin hitting that coin with the marks but NOT...and I repeat it does NOT make sense that they would often be attached as in a "D" ON TOP of ANOTHER one...and sometimes THREE in a row...all attached as if the top of one "D" is attached to the bottom of the next "D" and then (again sometimes) ANOTHER "D" attached to the bottom of the second one. I have been trying to find this answer LITERALLY for MONTHS...LOL...with NO rational explanation.....PLEASE HELP....Thank you Very......VERY SINCERELY, Michael
