Quote: They get the planchets from an outside vender. The mint no longer makes their own cent planchets. I wonder if the mint does their own burnishing on the proof planchets. EDIT: Added this link http://news.coinupdate.com/coin-pro...t-mint-4406/ to the silver proof production at West Point (8th image is the burnishing image)

So I went on ebay and bought one of these West Point proof cents for around $15ish. Just got it today. I am disappointed with it and may return it. There are a couple of spots, not really black spots. Maybe rub marks? But they are right by "In" and at the end of "Trust" on the obverse. Definitely under par with what I would expect from a proof coin.

Didn't order the set yet. I wait until the release of the Silver Proof set then order both along with the mint set. Reduces the added price when shipping is factored in. That said, and hopefully, the U.S. Mint may address the issue if enough people complain. Just maybe.

When I talked online to the mint on Wednesday, I was instructed to send the whole set back. It should get there tomorrow, so I will see if they return the original set or send a new one. I got the feeling that I was not the first one to discuss the problem with her. Interesting that the replies changed the next day. I'll post what happens.
Also, there were three "spots" on the obverse. Looked like a change in color, no scratches. One on the reverse. The three on the obverse were among and beside/inline with In God We Trust. The one on the reverse was also along the top edge.

No wonder the coins are coming out with contamination.

I like getting them together. I usually do not get the mint set, but will get one this year for the extra cent.

I went ahead and applied for a refund on ebay. Just sent it out this morning. I really wanted the W cent but it was less than I thought how a proof should be. When I think proof, I think flawless, no spotting or any other marks. They really dropped the ball on this one. They should take a cue from the RCM and start using that mint shield stuff.

Finally got around to checking my sets out - both W cents are flawless to my eye. No splotches or visible scratches. Sorry some of you guys aren't having luck with them.

Did anyone else see the Coinworld(?) article about the mint making individual 2019w cents available by mistake. To top it off they were sold for 1c each. I believe the article said it lasted a couple of hours.

Yep and if you visit the United States NCLT forum (where this thread should be) and look at Page 6 and 7 of the 2019 West Point Premium Penny thread, you'll see a lot of dialog and info on it -- almost a minute-by-minute account.

I received my four sets and three of the four had the pressure marks on the obverse side. 75% Bad. I emailed the Mint and the emailed back their Coolie Cutter reply which was a all purpose type reply for return items. I then emailed Coin World Magazine and they have pictures and scanned images of my defects. They are in the process of contacting the Mint to find out what caused it and what their feelings are on the issue. 3 out of 4 bad is 75% failure rate folks! To think with the modern Vision systems and automation available today that they would have much better quality control. I work in the Injection Molding Industry where 1% is sometimes unexceptable with Medical devices. Good thing the mint just makes money.

I got my proof set today. Happy to report: 1) The 2019-W penny and envelope were actually enclosed 2) It's actually a decent example - not PF70 but I'll take spot and scratch free 3) The rest of the set looks nice too Feel like I dodged a bullet after all the problems I've heard
