A friend of mine found this coin metal detecting and would like to know the value.

The problem is...he scratched it twice when digging it up
At 10:00 and 1:00

Grade? maybe XF-40....

Value? About $60-70 without the scratches, $30 with.

Well, at least it wasn't an 1873CC!

What price guide are you using Shadow?
Numismedia has this coin much higher....something like $104 in VF and $168 in EF

I used 2008 Red Book, maybe you were looking at 1876-CC.

I was looking at the 1876 but I must have seen the line above that which is the 1875-S
