Alright, I just picked this up for 70 bucks on ebay, which I think was a bargain at $70: The pictures are absolutely terrible, but I just felt I had to put this topic up tonight since I'm pretty enthusiastic about my purchase. It has some mint luster remaining on the front, but a lot more on the reverse, with rose gold and green toning. I'll post better pictures tomorrow morning.

This is for my type set, I'm shooting for mostly Au-low end unc for most varieties (except more modern things), and VF/XF for rarer coins (like the classic head large cent)

Hi Shadow, This might be a case where a terrible picture allows a nice coin to go for a bargain price. Certainly it appears to have AU luster and detail and a no-problem AU should go for nearly twice what you paid. Hopefully it doesn't have artificial toning, hairlines, or other defects that would lower the value. I'm looking forward to some better photos after the coin is delivered!

The pictures were taken by me at night, so that's why they're bad. The seller pictures were okay. If it's AU, I'd put it at AU-58. The hair details are very strong and I really couldn't detect any direct evidence of wear. Granted, it's a small coin, and it's hard to use the magnifier at night because of the shadow your head casts....
From what I can see, there's no signs of obvious cleaning on either side, but if it's been very lightly rubbed long ago, I don't really mind.

Alright, here's a better set of pictures. The best I can do with this small coin: I brought this to my local dealer today for an opinion while I was picking something up, he seemed to think the front was wiped long ago. I'm really not that surprised as I suspected this based on the darker color, nor do I care too much for purposes of my type set and given that I paid only $70. He also said it was AU with a very strong strike, I for the life of me could not see the wear spots, but in this photo I can see the wear spot on the knee, so I'd give it AU-58. Would you agree with that or do you have a different opinion?

The photos aren't optimum, but I don't see anything that would preclude an AU-58 grade. At AU-58 a coin is expected to have "full mint luster" and from what I can see this coin has lots of luster. I do see a slight greyish area on Liberty's right knee which could be a wear spot so probably an MS grade is off the table.
Again, unless there is one of those subtle problems that PCGS often finds on my coins ("altered surface", "questionable color", "tooling", "cleaned") I'd say you got an excellent deal for $70. Congrats!

In my type set now! Eventually I'll replace this with a higher grade coin once I fill in another ten holes or so, but for now, it's here to stay... My annoyance at TPG's has intensified slightly now that I got my gold $5 graded MS-61 when it's clearly much better, SO, for now, I don't think I'll be using TPG's except for authentication of key dates and whatnot, haha.
