That's nice! To my eyes, it closely matches the 1951D-1OM-002, and the underlying S looks more distinct than LDS--MDS perhaps?

Kurt - by looking at the absence of die wear on the date in the photo you should deduce it's MDS...it isn't in an individual detail - it's the whole design. Just to make sure you're not confusing slight differences in a single detail with different die states, a die state is determined solely by the wear on the die - nothing else.

I agree that this is 1951D-1OM-002, and I also agree that it's MDS - not because of the difference in the mintmark, but because the coin is MDS.

Thank you for clarifying on that important distinction. I appreciate your emphasis on terminology and proper methodology in attribution--it certainly has cleared my head of much confusion. This may be due to FE/IHC varieties, where people often judge die state by the variety features (such as overdates), and not other die markers. I don't know the reason for this, but it may have to do with condition issues on IHCs--many details are inconsistent between individual strikes. Thanks again for sharing your expertise!

Btw, did you see my discovery/analysis of a possible DDR 1956 Australian cent? What's your take?
