Bought this one on ebay for about $5. Much circulation wear, maybe a G. Looks like a type 2 to me, in which case it's worth what I paid. Would a couple of the knowledgeable people here confirm or deny, please?

Also, I've read that the type 2 is the rarer variety. Is this true?

It is indeed a Type 2, and yes, they are the scarcer of the two. Please show us the reverse. Appears cleaned.

Now that you mention it, the coin does look cleaned.
Not that it much matters on a fairly common coin in G condition. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

I guess I'm collecting Indian Head cents by default. Some months back, I bought an old Mehrig 1857-1909 cent album with some of the slots filled. Mine was the only bid, so I got it for about $80. I was disappointed to find almost all the cents with dried tape residue on them. Oh, well. I cleaned them up with acetone, with good results. And ... And when I flipped over the 1908 cent, I found an S on the reverse. Full liberty, too. So, it looks like I got my money's worth. Not my only ebay cherry pick, but maybe my best.

Good story - well done! How about pics of the '08-S?

I ordinarily would have messaged the seller and offered to pay him a few bucks more because he had overlooked the 08-S.
But, there was nothing in the listing about tape residue, and I didn't even think to flip the coin over to check until weeks later. It didn't occur to me that someone could overlook something like that.

I'd call the coin a strong F, maybe even a borderline VF.
