1850 Central America 2 Escudos Gold - Genuine Or Counterfeit?

MasterKromm Valued Member United States 110 Posts	Posted 01/15/2022 6:34 pm Hi Guys, I was hoping for a little help with an 1850 Central America Republic 2 Escudos gold coin. It was part of a small group of gold Central/S. American coins I recently purchased - the other two, an 1855 Costa Rica 2 escudos + 1928 Ecuador Condor are legit and I have never had problems with this dealer before (which is why I didn't bother asking the dealer to weigh the coins)... To my eyes, comparing it with some specimen I found at Stacks Bowers archives, it appears genuine. However, the weight at 6.22 grams is off by a good bit compared to the 6.75 grams listed on numista... That said, in 1850 there was also a Costa Rica 2 escudos gold coin that weighed in at 6.3 grams. Is there any chance the coin was struck on the 6.3g planchet? Any insight would be most appreciated! Report this Post to the Staff

tdziemia Pillar of the Community United States 7968 Posts	Posted 01/16/2022 9:20 pm While NGC and Numista cite 6.75 g, most of the examples that are in acsearch and actually list a weight are between 6.2 and 6.3 g. I normally don't care to have coins less than AU graded, but in this case I would like to confirm it's authenticity... I have already worked it out with the dealer that should the coin come back as a counterfeit he will refund the full amount I paid for the coin. Again, thanks for the help! Perhaps ex-jewelry, as a decent amount of this issue are and as hinted at by the rim nicks and a looks to be a slightly reflective-looking surface. If they call it "Details", it will go XF Det.
