First thought was a Dryer Coin but the diameter seems fine and not sure that would explain the missing Monticello and melted look on the reverse.

Is that what this is?

Certainly it's post strike damage. May (may...) have suffered heat damage very early in its life, perhaps exposure to a corrosive/caustic/acidic environment. May have been 'cleaned' at one point--at least an attempt was made. Possible that most damage was intentional. Does show circulation-like wear as well. Would be a fun curiosity to keep.

Weight? It under weight, then it may have been in an acid bath.

I agree with the @frog that knowing the weight would be helpful. Thx.

Yes, I keep all the uglies I find. Didn't consider acid since the coin is otherwise smooth and shiny but that could make sense for the reverse. Weight seems fine - 4.95 (assuming margin +/- .05)
