Is it common to have business strike coins in a proof set? I bought an S proof set and it has a business strike dime in it from Philadelphia, according to an appraiser at HA. It's a 1975 S proof set, but the dime has no mint mark.

Thank you!

There have been two graded 1975 no S Dimes in proof sets but I do not know much about it but I found this on coinfacts. I know others will want to see a pic of the obverse and reverse of the dime

Check out this 1975 10C No S on PCGS CoinFacts!

This is a direct quote from PCGS:

Quote:
Only two examples of the 1975-S No S Dime are known. The first coin was discovered in a 1975-S Proof Set in 1977. The second example was found seven years later. The discovery coin was sold in 1979 to Proof coin specialist, Fred Vollmer, who sold it the next years later to a collector. Neither coin had ever appeared at auction until the discovery coin was included in the 2011 ANA sale offerings by Stack's-Bowers.

"No-S" Proof coins were the product of the way in which Proof dies were handled. Beginning in 1968, when the San Francisco Mint began striking Proof coins, all dies for Proof coins were prepared at the Philadelphia Mint. This was done by adding a mintmark to a normal P-Mint die. However, some dies escaped this process, thus we see "No-S" dimes in 1968, 1970, 1975, and 1983, "No-S" Nickels in 1971, and "No-S" Lincoln Cents in 1990. Any estimates of the number of "No-S" coins is strictly a guess, but all except for the 1975 No-S Dime have certified populations of between 24 and 242.

Is it a business strike just in the proof set slot? The proof sets are not truly sealed so it is possible someone opened it up and swapped the proof dime out with a regular business strike.

If it is a Proof with no S mint mark, well then as others have said, you've got yourself something there.

Definitely check for tampering with the case. Does the dime have a proof finish?

(I saw OP's pix after replying. Does not look like a proof, on first glance.)

The surface is extremely shiny.

Gosh, so who do you purchase from who has legitimate coins? I bought this from a coin shop. It came in a proof envelope.

What that set is, is a Philadelphia Minted Uncirculated set. it would have cone in a white envelope along with the Denver mints uncirculated set as well.
Here is an image of my P mint uncirculated set.
then the full uncirculated set
THEN, a San Francisco Proof set

Or is this just a regular Philadelphia mint set? It is a little hard to see mintmarks through the glare, but I can't seem to make out any mintmarks. with halfamind about tampering with the case possibility.

Half a 1975 US Mint Set, that's all. None of the other coins have a mintmark either.
