mestephil: The bottom one is dead on. The medal has a golden hue to it; in full sunlight it practically shines. Wish I had had the box ages ago when I was posting new acquisition medals in this thread: https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...IC_ID=269184

Nice...can you post a pic of the box and possibly a link?

Here's a link to the light box I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RS75LV...plhdr=t&th=1 Edited to add: The controls allow for activating one or both rings of the LED lights and stepping up or down on the brightness. It is not a true dimmer switch that would allow one to set the brightness levels from 1 to 100%. . .I'll need to experiment with the various backdrop colors (there are 10), diffusion, and possibly adding non reflective panels on the sides to get the best results when photographing proof coins. Make it a great day.

WOW. That is a great picture of a coin, even if you feel that the other image is closer to the true color.

Looks like the reddish one was just way off in white balance. Probably the background was not pink, and if it was white or grey, then proper white balance would probably have rendered the image with true color.

Is the white balance that can be corrected with software, or is the difference baked into the image now?
I find it visually quite pleasing, so I suppose I will have to experiment with different color backgrounds for coins now.

@rmpsrpms: The reddish one was taken outdoors, beneath a gazebo roof, on a fairly sunny afternoon. . .background was a cardboard box. Did not use my homemade 'diffuser.' A lot of the medal photos I've posted were taken with a very rudimentary adaptation of the "milk jug" diffuser suggestions found earlier in this thread. The photos below were taken during the annular eclipse about twenty minutes ago: Being at the mercy of the brightness, angle of the sun, and other variables posed quite the challenge. But it cost me $0 to try. With Winter on the way, I'll be glad to keep my medal & coin photography indoors.

Was that taken with a smartphone, tablet, or a camera?

Quote: Is the white balance that can be corrected with software, or is the difference baked into the image now? I did not know the answer. The "original image was still in the Pixlr X local temporary cache, so I fiddled with it: Original vs. Pixlr manipulated: -30% on Black, +30% on White. No other adjustments. Quote: Was that taken with a smartphone, tablet, or a camera? iPhone 14; the camera rests on top of the plastic container to steady things.

Many software suites allow change in white balance on shot photos. I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional, which allows WB adjustment, and it's free. The last photo still looks pink. Changing black and white won't change white balance/tone, only brightness/contrast. I played around with it a bit in DPP. I don't really know the color of the cardboard you used, but here's one shot at doing a rebalancing:

These are all nice and it is a nice idea. The original purpose of this thread was to show people how to force auto focus onto a coin with no special equipment. But these methods being shown are good to see also.

No intent to hijack your thread, Earle42. Your ingenuity and discussions spurred me on to improve the quality of the images I post here. This remains one of the most helpful threads on the CCF forum

I was hoping I worded it so you knew I appreciated your sharing your setup as well. I just posted so newbies reading here would understand, after so many pages, the original idea is so they can take decent pics without needing special equipment. I think the next step up would be something like you have. I like the cup innovation as well.
