That steplike doubling which reduces the width of the numbers 9 and 7 is Machine Doubling.

Reduced devices with step like appearance indicates MD.

Given the single pic posted, I'm seeing machine doubling--not all that uncommon with '70 cents minted in San Francisco.

I see no evidence of hub doubling. Keep in mind that is one area is affected it is probably not a doubled die. Other areas should also be affected as well. On the 1970 cents, the doubled dies are on different areas than are what are found on other cents.

This area is the only affected are on the 1970's cents. Why? Not sure why? Seems odd that they happened that way on only one year? Take a look and see what I'm talking about. Learn where to look for doubled dies. What to look for. You search through this year maybe surprising. (Most people are not looking there)
