...I just won one in an auction for $150. The auction included an 1896-O Barber quarter, a 1929 SLQ, 1911-D, 1912, & 1912-D Barber dimes, and an 1854 Seated Liberty dime.

I am under the assumption that the 1896-S very well could be counterfeit. The buyer offers a 7 day no questions asked return policy (or else I wouldn't have bid.)

I am gonna need help to make sure it's authentic (though I'm fairly sure that it will be).

...Boy, I am excited!

1896-O Barber quarter? That's not as rare as the 1896-S, so I wouldn't say it's too likely to be counterfeited. It's still a rare coin though, so I'd double check. What grade is it? If it's F-12 or better, you did really well.

Please post some pictures soon! It should be pretty obvious to tell an outright fake, but it'll take a little more work to detect an altered coin. For $150, I'd be worried that the 96-S is fake too. Even if it is, you might have still done alright, though.

As soon as this coin is in hand, I will be posting pictures.

Am I under the correct assumption that if the 1896-S is real and in G+ condition, that it would be worth nearly $1,000?

Pictures from the auction:

If real, it looks to me like it will be in Good condition, most likely.

You prolly got lucky! Great for you, I sure hope so. I would not take it back to the auctioneer first!
I'd find out for sure elsewhere.

Here's hoping you got real lucky but a 96-S for $150 alone would be the steal of a lifetime.

Naturally post really good pics but if you have any local dealers you really trust let them take a look.

Hoping for the best for you!

Good luck, but at best, from the pictures, it would be AG.

I hope that you get it.

I love those Barbers!
