1970 S Lincoln Cent What Is Behind Lincoln's Neck?

shuddle10 New Member United States 48 Posts	Posted 10/10/2023 8:33 pm I've been looking at this coin for months. It definitely has heavy and very prominent Machine Doubling, especially in the motto. About a week ago, all of a sudden I noticed possible doubling behind Lincoln's neck. If not doubled, what could it be? I've not been able to find any attributions on my own. Nor have I seen this on any Lincoln Cent I have in my collection. If anyone is aware of something out there on this coin, I appreciate pointing me in the right direction. Also, I'm not entirely sure if it is a small over large date, or vice versa. It has a S/S mint mark, too. If it is not a date over date, then the 9 is definitely doubled at the very least. So let go to see what are my opinions: Upper behind the nec seem to be a small gauce. Bottom part seem to be characteristic with Hub Doubling find in many coins of this period. I have no statistic for penny but in Halves and Quarters is hard to find a coin without. The double strike coins allways will give impression of doubling or MD. In fact it is the flow of the material on the second strike combinate with the heat of the Dies from the first strike. Me I allways try to find very clear strikes but it is a chalenge for the period which start in 1965 and end in the late of 1990's Hope this will help. Report this Post to the Staff
