I was going through my Kennedy Rolls and found 60% of my Kennedy halves had a little clash or doubling on one of the rays between the stars and medallions on the reverse of the coins. I have never heard of this error but found a stack of Kennedy's from the 70's and 80's with this error. I need a little help trying to decide if this is a veriety or an error. I mean it is on a lot of coins. I have stacks of Kennedy's that have it to different degrees. I even looked up a 1972 D on PCGS and it had the same defect in the exact same place. Could this error have been hiding in plan sight all these decades and noone recognized it. Please give me some feedback on this.

Wow, I've never noticed that before. I wonder if it's a Doubled Die Reverse, or it's part of the design? I found another one that showed it online.

I do not think anyone else has identified it yet. But pretty cool. Check all your 70's and 80's Kenedy Halves my friend.

Well, so far, using the 6x zoom (on my phone) all of my halves that I looked at so far (1964 to 1972) - have that 'notched' medallion. I'll have to keep looking at the newer ones once I get out my scope to better view them) But only the 1971 (P) and the 1971-D have that what you called a die marker on them. Not the 1971-S though, it is clear of that mark.
Once I get my scope out and charged, I'll get some images posted here.

I look for this only the Denver from 1971 till 1994 and find:
73, 80, 81.

Interesting that the 1978 and 1984 the third ray it is curved up.

I will dig more on all the years and Mints to see from where it is comming. I have an idea, but let the study to speak.

That little gouge is on a Master Die which is why you see it on so many reverses.

So far I have over 75 coins with this anomaly. Dates involved so far:
1971 P/D, 1977 P, 1979 P/D
19080 P/D, 1981 P/D, 1982 D, 1983 P/D, 1984 D

I still have lots of coins to go throgh and the 1982 and 84 I only had
one coin so far to look at. I am digging through all my Kennedy's now
to get more candidates to look at.

I did some looking around in PCGS values and found a few years with
this same issue.

While looking through my 1973 D Kennedy halves I found this DDR which I believe derived from my original error that I found. Check this one out.
