A "colt's Patent" Counterstamp On An 1837 Large Cent

ExoGuy Pillar of the Community United States 4421 Posts	Posted 02/07/2024 1:12 pm This is one of two listed/known COLT'S PATENT stampings on a coin. Samuel Colt used this stamp on his firearms and bullet molds as pictured below. The other coin is an 1838 large cent. Matching the coin marks to the products is often essential to confirming a positive attribution. These counterstamps likely date to the 1840's or later. Below is shown an early bullet mold with the same stamp .... Here's a Colt "Baby Dragoon" .31 caliber pistol that bears the COLT'S PATENT stamp .... It goes without saying that Colt was one of the most important makers of firearms in the nineteenth century. Born in 1814, he died in 1862.
