Dug 1797 Large Cent With Counterstamp

That's one heck of a MD find. Fantastic.

Given the large font size of these stampings, I'd guess that the stamper was an early, pre Civil War, blacksmith or toolmaker. I'm not seeing a sufficiently decipherable stamping here to make an attribution. Offhand, it appears to me that a partial stamping appears to have been twice-hammered. This suggests to me that whoever applied these stampings was simply testing their stamp on a pocket coin.

I've a number of dug c/s's in my collection, the great majority of which have been attributed. Maverick c/s's like this one, lacking any specific history, have very little value, of course. Musing about suspected origins is fun though ....
