Looks like it was re-plated, and not a very good job of it.

The coin may have been a late die stage to begin with but the biggest issue is it is a reprocessed coin, re-plated, so just a damaged coin....

Remember, Tacc, that all 43's were plated and I'm sure you meant re-plated by your statement.

Yes I agree with the above that a well-worn coin has been re-plated to make it look shiny.

The extra width or "bold"-ness to the letters is likely due to circulation flattening.
