Hey, got another one for ya's. My mate has a swag of mint condition 1972 5c coins. He believes there was a low mintage in this year, and wants to know how much they may be worth. As I'm new to collecting I have no idea, but I told him I'd ask on here, so here I am. :)

Hi spd_dmn

Mintage on the 1972 was 8,256,000 making it a very low Mintage in comparison to the other years.

Krause lists the values like this.

F-.15 VF-.30 XF-1.00 UNC-7.50

The Australian catalogues don't give a value for anything less than Unc for the decimals, because you'd be hard pressed to find a dealer here who'd give more than face falue for circulated ones - they aren't quite in the "scarce" category yet.

I can't tell you what Renniks/Maccas quotes them at - my copies are still out on loan.

Maccas has the 1972 5c in UNC at $32. For a real idea of their worth try doing an ebay search.

Just looking at ebay myself I see

1972 UNC $18.05
1972 circ (looks VF to me) $2

Nothing else I can find there. Interestingly if your friend can get $18 for each of his 5c that's an equivalent ROI of around 19% (compounding) over the 34 year period. If only he'd bought 50000 of them and could actually find 50000 people who wanted to give him $18 for each of them.

Yes spd_dmn - Grade has everything to do with what they are worth, (do you know what grade they are?)as you have already been given an UNC price above I though I give you a dealers buy price (this was what I was offered for common circulated coins) and this was as mentioned above $2 AUD ea.
