Just in case someone is tempted to "snag" this one ... there's a current listing on the Bay (sorry I can't post the link from my current locale) for a raw 1878 8TF VAM 9. The seller is "snibby63". The coin is a VAM 14. I emailed the seller late yesterday afternoon with this correction, but the listing was unchanged when I signed off for the night.

This seller is not very good at attributing Morgan VAMs. It almost appears the ruse is intentional. If you take the time to read the text (lengthy), you'll note that they offer no guarantee and perfectly describe the VAM 14. Yet because both the VAM 9 and VAM 14 shared the same obverse die, it has to be the more expensive and desirable VAM 9.

Makes me wonder if AMAC changed his screen name on ebay ... (inside joke for the old timers here!)

Heavily cleaned to boot. Don't see the most important "comma" feather. Thanks for the heads up. Bidders beware! nlp

An update...

The seller has modified this listing to include four emails received notifying her that the coin was not a VAM 9, instead it is a VAM 14. She included these emails at the bottom of the auction listing, but if someone doesn't read that far they could miss them.

Her email to me thanked me for bringing this to her attention and that she struggles with attribution. That's why she includes lots of detailed photos.

The lesson here ... don't trust a sellers attribution unless you can verify through photographic proof.

Last update ... she cancelled the auction. In her email back to me she did this because of the volume of emails telling her it was the more common VAM 14. She didn't want anyone to be confused by her initial mistake.

It turns out she's a neophyte Vammer and sometimes has difficulty with attribution. She appreciated the notifications and sincerely wanted to get it right. I would not hesitate to buy from her based on this response.

Cheers!
