Maybe it's just me, but the color doesn't look right to me. I'm not as well-versed in World gold, but were these counterfeited? I would definitely suggest weighing the coin. According to Krause, it should weigh 6.4516 g.

looks like it was cleaned with sand paper and with all the scratches if it was a counterfit you would probably see the base metal I would think. I know nothing about Gold US coins and know even less about Gold World coins so my suggestion is just a guess at best but wanted to see what others said about it anyhow, but please do not take my example as gospel because I could be so far out of the ball park that I am not even watching the game on tv

Hi BeornLS

Heck I Like ya already with your sense of humor-arg arg arg, yes coins are round and usually flat, but you would be surprised of all the shapes and those with holes in the middle--

Anyway, the coin you posted according to my trusty "Gold Coins of da World" states & I quote "Head of the Republic /Rv. Rooster (Type Marianne)(The lady pictured is Marianne). It is 20 Francs, made in 1899, 1901-1906 (and other dates)--value in EF-$75 and in UNC $110. Now I noticed a pretty good gouge bout 8 o'clock, if you look in thar it should still look like gold, if ya see silver its a fake. In any event it "appears by your pics to look good, altho "severely" cleaned in its history--It definitely IS NOT an UNC, so its value will be below a $100, for sure, even less if cleaned which to me it has been whizzed which is worse--Its value is prolly just bullion weight or perhaps a couple bucks above --Sorry mang-- Still tho IT IS gold-Heck wish I found it--I would keep it as pocket change and show off with it--hehe

O BTW, welcome to our Forum--

Hi All,

Thanks for all this help on the coin I found! Makes me wanna dig out my other coins I got laying around in the safe :) sounds like it could lead into a very interesting hobby.

From what I can find on this one, I'm not retiring or anything ;) but still a good find I think!

I like the Ciscos idea of just carrying it around and saying LOOK!! GOLD!!! lol...

Thanks again for everyones help :)
