I got a Texas quarter in change today that really looks odd. It looks like a proof, very brilliant, lots of luster. The odd thing is that the edge shows no copper at all. It looks like all silver. Am I wrong or was the only Texas Washingtons silver minted with a S mint mark?

Not absolutely sure about the S only being silver
But if it has no copper around the edge and it looks
like an impaired proof it probably is.
My Brother in law received a proof silver Washington State Quarter
in change from Taco Bell a couple of years ago.
Some kid probably broke open one of dad's proof sets for a
Burrito
Oh Crap I just noticed the title
2004 P
If it is silver them it might be an off metal planchet
Well worth checking out

Terry

Only silver issued American States quarters were minted in San Francisco. If it has an S mint mark, then you have silver. If it is a D or P then it is clad.
If the field is mirror like and the Washington looks frosted and it has an S mint mark, then you would have a proof. Mind you not all proofs have to be cameos (deep frosted highlights).

Easiest way to tell is weight. What is the weight?

Umm, not necessarily so...

Just because a quarter has an S mintmark does NOT mean it's silver. They minted both the silver AND clad. The difference is very obvious without a scale. The color of the metal is much different and the sound it makes on a table is very different too.

Possibly one of those "platinum" plated quarters they sold on HSN?

Well, I weighted the coin; it is spot on 5.7 grams. Took another very close look at the edge, there is absolutely no copper showing anywhere and the luster is brilliant. Hopefully latter in the week I can get some pics.

Being a Washington State Quarter silver proof collector I would like to see a photo. That would be one cheap silver proof you just acquired!
