VG-8 for the first and VG-10 for the second seem to be about right.

Is there a way of doing that other than paying to join PCGS then paying again for them to grade/slab it?

If you're able to find a PCGS authorized dealer in your area you could send it in through the dealer...here's the list:

You can submit coins to ANACS without paying for any membership. For a VG Morgan they are good choice IMO; top notch for authentication.

Adam E: I appreciate your going against the grain. I do like seeing a variety of feedback, and to be honest, I was worried there would be a consensus of G(06) at first. I am really curious to see what a professional grading service would say.

Yes, thank you very much. The consensus is in close quarter, so I think that you guys know what you are talking about. Thanks again.

Number 1 is a definite VG8 based on one that I got back from NGC.

Number 2 is probably a G4-6.

Update: I just sent this coin off to be certified at PCGS. I was warned, however, that it is a gamble. I was told that it might be certified as "Genuine" without a grade because grading services generally do not like when coins are dark like that. I hope this is not the case. Give me a VG(08) grade and I'm happy!

Thanks again, all of you for your input.

Adam: I believe your coin will grade unless there's something we can't see in the pics. VG08 would be a conservative grade for your coin too, it looks VG10 and not far from a F12. PCGS certified a 1879-CC Morgan of mine last spring that was far less less detailed than yours, with 75% of the rims worn into the fields, at G06. Good Luck!

Update and let the family know when you get the verdict from PCGS. We like seeing these full stories play out.
Rest in Peace

Yeah, I dont see any reason why PCGS wouldnt grade yours Adam. It has very few marks of any kind and the surfaces look pristine and original. Definitely not too dark imho. Zeewool also has a terrific Morgan. His has more detail and should grade higher, though I prefer the surfaces and overall look of Adam's.

Here is mine which is quite similar to yours in color. Unfortunately I was surprised to see it come back with VG Details, "Improperly Cleaned"from NGC.

Planchet flaw or crack?

Coins92: I am sorry about that. I have heard no one tell me that mine looks cleaned or tampered with, but I have been told that PCGS in particular does not think favorably about dark coins. I hope I have more luck. I don't want mine to have to bear the scarlet letters "Cleaned" or "PCGS Genuine."

Zeewool: I am inexperienced, but trying to learn. I'm guessing that it's a planchet flaw.

The unevenness of the two sides would cause a person to think that, but the little blobs of metal in front of the letters could cause other thoughts as well.

Crack. A planchet flaw would continue thru the letters.
