Hi. This is one of the newest looking 1963's I found in rolls the other day. It's a hanging 3 although thats not so easy to see with the scan. Too bad the coin has some scratches :( It's super rare, at least for me, to have found such a bright almost new looking 1963 though. Most coins from the 60's I find are quite brown with traces of red if red at all. I actually found 5 five fairly new red and very lustery looking shaped 63's and 64's in that batch last week. Here is the 1963 Hanging 3:    PS: I notice that I love finding coins with this image of the Queen on them, and those with King George VI. I get excited when I see them  Edited by Dottir

Nice find. I find a few hanging number cents per year, most are brown and a few red/brown. Once in awhile I will find a red one. Are you trying to put together a set of hanging numbers? John1  |

I have a few hanging numbers ones, somewhere in all my coins, but no I'm not collecting them in particular. I'll put them in 2x2's as I find them if they're in not too bad shape. I pretty much hang onto almost every pre-1965 penny I get in my hands even if not in great shape, and most others up to 1970. From 1970 on I get pickier and tend to hang onto dates with varieties like the 1965, 1983, 1985, and any better shape 70's, 80's, 90's etc I have no idea what the varieties like hanging numbers are worth. What would people pay for them? I realize condition counts for values  PS: I guess I really haven't thought much about collecting specifics and building sets other than building sets of progressive dates, one for every year sort of thing. What I do so far is collect 'em all, especially the dates I mentioned in the 2nd paragraph. I guess I'd part with varieties, especially if I had duplicates or knew I'd come across more. By hanging, do you mean the 3 is lower, or there's a mark in the field above the digit?  The portrait from 1953-64 is my favorite of QE II. |

I mean there's a curved mark in the field above the 3. I personally can't see a 3 shape like the actual shape of the number 3 in the date but I do see the curved ridge/s shape. In Coinsandcanada site thats called a hanging 3 though by what I've seen in that site? Correct me if I'm wrong please. To my eye it looks like some sort of die clash curved ridge of some kind of design and I always feel confused trying to make a 3 out of it. Its "kinda like a 3" to me  I'd like to hear other peoples opinions about these "hanging" numbers. |

I've read these clashes are common to this particular portrait, where the underside of the chin clashed with the reverse. It lines up correctly on my coin.  |

Aha! I haven't come across that info until you just mentioned it and that actually makes more sense to me because of the shape of the curve than a 3 shape! I just don't see a 3 in the shape and yes it looks to me pretty much like QE's under chin curve By the way, that's a VERY pretty pretty 1955 you have there! |

Thanks! I found that one in an ICCS holder, graded MS65. Just for fun, I did an overlay of your coin, simulating how the obverse and reverse dies might clash. Clashes appear as a reversed design on the opposing die. It lines up pretty well, doesn't it?  |

I noticed this one a few days ago, my first Canada 1¢ Die Clash:  I might have to closely examine all my 1¢ to see if I have any more. Unlikely I guess, seeing I'm in Australia, but you never know. I love die clashes. life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Wow and no kidding about the overlay lining up!! I hope you don't mind me saving a copy of that overlay image to use just for future reference for myself? Those overlay images people post sure are nice and handy. However do you all do that? G'Day Nancyc No I'm not Aussie but have many friends and acquaintances that I keep in touch with in Australia that are. I almost made it there for a visit a few years ago and sure would have enjoyed seeing lots of communities and critters plus all the Aussie coins and paper money first hand too! Fell ill and couldn't travel. HUGE disppointment! That's a nice Canadian find and I'm glad you spotted this thread to be able to see the overlay image too! Your "curve" appears just like mine doesn't it? Do you have many Canadian coins? I know you don't find many there but wondered if you have many more? |

Thank you I had NO idea that you could do that sort of thing with photoshop, or how you would go about it  I guess we don't learn to capabilities of these programs until we start playing with finding out what the functions are and do, or someone just tells us. |

Dottir, I have a reasonably large Canadian collection. No real rarities, but always looking for hole fillers etc.  I have approx 200 plus Canadian 1¢, some in sets, some unc, a couple proof, but most are just regular coins from circulation. I'll be checking them all soon to see if there are any more 'hangers' amongst them. life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Sounds like you are ahead of me for Canadian coins and you have quite a nice sounding one going already. I just started searching and hanging onto some coins fairly recently so I have a lot of fun ahead of me still.
I love the hunt of roll searching. I really get a charge out of "finding" coins and I stick mainly to pennies in change and rolls due to a real small budget. I'm having lots of fun :)
