http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:ITI was interested in this coin, but when I saw the COA, I became suspicious. Original 1891 COA's have the certificate number as 91 (date) followed by at least (2) zeros. There were only 5,687 of this date in the GSA sales and put into the holders. This certificate clearly indicates that this coin is number 434,963 (way too many). I pointed this out to the seller, and he continued to sell the coin and COA. I wonder if he notified the buyer of a possible counterfeit paper? What do you think?

You know what,I have had GSA Morgans just about since I started collecting and never knew about the serial numbers having to have 0's after the date. I did know the first two digits were the date but didn't know the other or even that the COA's were counterfeited

There is nothing wrong with the cert for the 1885 in the ebay listing above. With 148000+ sold in the GSA sale there were plenty to get a full 8 digit cert number. (85 plus 6 digits worth of sales). The year/00XXXX concept only applies to 1879, 1890 and 1891. 1878 GSA certs should have 780XXXXX to account for the release numbers. 1889, 1892 and 1893 were all single coin releases and while the 1889 has been slabbed by NGC, I don't think anyone knows the where abouts of the other 2. |

You are absolutely correct jfransch. Just check the population report for GSA dollars. It's the 21st century, and you better educate yourself, or sometime down the line you'll be very disapointed when you find out you have a counterfeit. By the way, I did report the seller of the 1891-CC GSA with the suspect COA. I wonder what will happen next?
