I recently purchased my third 1874-CC Trade dollar -- the first two were both counterfeits. One of the areas that I check when examining a Trade dollar is the eagle's eye. My understanding is that it should look like this.

The eye on this coin looks like this.

I immediately assumed this was another counterfeit. It weighed 26.9 grams which I felt was just slightly too light for a coin with almost no wear. The seller swears the coin is genuine so I agreed to have it certified. The coin is at ANACS right now. Yesterday, I received an 1876-S Trade dollar and it has the same round eye. I looked on the PCGS web site where they show the photogrades for Trade dollars. I was surprised to find that the MS 67 example also has a round eye. Now I'm wondering if maybe these two coins are OK. I'll be sending the 1876-S in for certification as well. Does anyone have any information about the round eye vs. half-closed eye?

my 1877-S has the round eye and I know its legit as it came out of a reputable TPG slab, well I know with as much certainty as anyone could possibly know

I don't know anything about Trade dollars but after staring at the first pic, the second seems a little cartoonish whether it's legit or not.

I like the first one, it looks nice and evil like an eagle should

I don't know if different years or different mint marks are different with these Trade dollars but I am sure others here will know what the difference is. I dod see this one dates 1874-CC has the eye like the first picture provided
these images are on Trade dollar nut's website

Here is a 1876-S

Its hard to see the eye on the 1876-S but it does look like it is the rounder eye like the second picture from what I can tell so they probably have two different designs

My 2006 Red Book doesn't mention anything about changing the eagle's eye. The picture of the Trade dollar that they show isn't big enough for me to get a good look, but it appears as if it is the cartoonish eye shown.
