1987-S Lincoln Cent - Doubling Error?

aboarman Valued Member United States 132 Posts	Posted 07/03/2011 4:38 pm I recently came across a 1987-S Proof cent that shows doubling on the obverse of the coin, primarily around the mint mark, date, the "LI" in LIBERTY, and GOD. I am attaching a photo of the coin. At first look, it may appear that the doubling you see is simple light glare, but I have examined the coin myself at high magnification, and the doubling is definitely there. It can also be seen when viewed from the sign, which tells me that the doubling is the result of a mis-strike or something. I would very much appreciate it if you might have a look, and even more get back with any info you may have. Thank you! Adam Report this Post to the Staff

aboarman Valued Member United States 132 Posts	Posted 07/03/2011 10:35 pm One light source, from the right. The color of the apparent doubling is almost white, as in the pic. Also, notice how the "S" is "doubled" to the lower right, while in "GOD" it's to the upper side. Report this Post to the Staff
Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 07/03/2011 10:42 pm This really looks like split copper plating to me, more of a quality issue than anything else. what you are seeing is the zinc core. I don't see any doubling in the pics. Report this Post to the Staff
