How difficult is a Dansco Capped Bust set to put together? There are a lot of varieties. Has anyone put a set together or working on a set? I am considering a VF set.

Not really difficult - there are plenty on the market - but they have an absolutely fanatical fan base who collect by Overton variety. So, you'll want to stick to more common varieties (if they're attributed) and you'll run into competition/price inflation in higher grades. VF is a nice compromise; most of the hardcore guys want XF and better.

Which one of the capped bust denominations are you looking to put together? Half Dime? dime? quarter? half dollar?

The 1815 might be a bit pricy and I think a couple of the reeded ones are pretty rare too.

Sorry I forgot the denomination. I am looking at a half dollar denomination.

The 1815/2 and the 1836 reeded edge are both a bit pricey and hard to find. Each will set you back a few thousand dollars each in most grades.

Some are really really pricy but I think it can be done.

Fortunately, neither of these are specifically called out in a Dansco 6151.

That is good that the 1836 reeded edge is not called for but I thought the 1815/2 is as I believe that is only option. Did they leave out that date in the dansco?

A well-matched set in any grade is impressive. VF would be this guy's choice, too. Consider that Bust Halves are oftentimes unevenly struck. I'd shoot for coins that are evenly struck and have a full clasp, VF-30/35. Also, I'd start with an 1815/2 which has good eye-appeal, then, I'd match the others to it. That key date won't get any cheaper as time passes. Good luck!

Well, as a CBH fan myself, I'll say that it's not too difficult, if you've got the green. Other than the 36 reeded and the 15, the prices are pretty similar across the set, which makes it very different than, say, a set of merc dimes, where 75% of the cost is in one coin.

You do have to have some patience, though, since the early ones don't come around all too often. You'll definitely have a hard time finding an attractive 15 and 36 reeded at any kind of price approximating reasonable.

VF is a reasonable compromise between cost and appeal, although I'd recommend XF if you can swing it, as there really is a noticeable eye-appeal difference. Once you reach AU, the prices start getting considerably harder to swallow.

I really like the 1836 reeded edge half. Quite scarce, and in my opinion, undervalued.

The Dansco 6151 calls out some varieties, the easier overdates, square/curl-base 2's, etc. Blank spaces exist, too. There's only one hole for 1815. 1836 has two holes with just the date (implying a spot for the Reeded version, but it's not labeled), plus a third spot for the 50/00 variety.

There was only one 1815, AFAIK, and it's the 5/2 with mintage in the 40K range. Just a tad over $4K in VF on numismedia. No way to fill that hole without big bucks.

I'm trying!

Certainly not even VF but almost all the varieties are there (missing the 1807 small stars (I have another 1807 O-112, large stars in that slot now), and of course the 1815 (over 2).

Lots of room for upgrades!
