Kennedy 40 Percent Question - Coin Community Forum

jmkendall Pillar of the Community United States 1590 Posts	Posted 09/06/2011 7:58 pm This may seem like an stupid question, but on the Kennedy 40 percent halves how common is it to see the copper middle layer. I noticed it on one of mine from an Uncirc, Mint set. But when I looked at the other ones, at hand, I did notice it on theme. My others are locked up in my Safe deposit box and I did not want to go to the bank for something which is probably a simple answer! Thanks! Report this Post to the Staff

biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 09/06/2011 8:16 pm Slight difference in the core of the silver vs. CuNi clad- silver clad has a 20/80 AgCu core while CuNi clad is pure copper. The core on silver clads will sometimes have a dark grey appearance rather than a coppery appearance. Report this Post to the Staff

I've searched over one hundred thousand dollars in halves and don't miss any 40%, on the very rare occasion I might have missed a 40 that I didn't distinguish from non-silver, but I won't lose sleep over it. If you are looking for errors or other types, go ahead and date search. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Sometimes you get a tricky 40%er but generally they are easy enough to see. For the time you save and what you may miss it is worth doing. Report this Post to the Staff
RollHunter Pillar of the Community United States 687 Posts	Posted 09/07/2011 9:11 pm I only look at the dates because I'm still looking for 1987P - I've been through > 20K in halves and only once have I been surprised by one that looked clad from the edge. You can even spot 81's and proofs from the edge because they're so "fat." Report this Post to the Staff
