This coin I just got back from NGC. I sent it in just to
have it in a slab, there is no slot for it in my Dansco.

I never thought it would come back this grade. It is the
only 70 grade coin I have.

In case some don't know, this coin was only issued with the
RFK commemorative two coin set. It is a

1998 S matte proof in 90% silver

Not exactly sure of the mintage, I found two site that post different numbers 62,000 and 66,000. If anyone knows the exact number please let me know.

And again I want to thank nolawyer for selling me this coin.

That was the last one I needed to complete my Kennedy set. Bought one about a month ago for $130, but it is nowhere near as nice as that one. Color me jealous.

I cant find any mintage info, but as far as Coin World and the RedBook are concerned, there are no SP or MS 70's out there. No values listed. Coin World doesn't show the SP grading, but list this one as an MS. Highest listed is MS67 at 300 bucks. I would be checking population reports for PCGS, ANACS, and ICG as well to see if they have graded any as 70. I presume you already checked NGC. You could have a high dollar coin there.

Oh, BEAUTIFUL!

Thanks all for all the positive comments, I am really liking this coin.

Not really sure what the population is, I think you have to be a member of NGC to see
that report. With matte proof coins I think most are in high grades. I see a lot of
SP 68 and SP 69's. I do know that nusimedia and NGC price guides list the value at $600
for the SP 70 grade.

Fun fact - In Whitman's book 100 greatest modern coins, this coin is #22. NGC I think has
recently started a registry set based on this list. The 1997 matte proof Jefferson nickel
is #15 and the 1994 matte proof Jefferson nickel is #44

I just love the matte proofs. It is a way to get a coin that looks flawless without making it all shiny and fake looking like regular proofs that I dislike so much. I just recently bought the 1994 matte nickel!

Murrellington I agree, the matte proof look is something I really like. I wish there was more of them. I have two of the 1994's but have been thinking of picking up some more, I think they are a good deal right now

The only thing I dislike about my 1994 matte nickel is the gold toning on the reverse from sitting in the currency set. I'm a fan of toning, but not a plain gold tone over the entire face. Distracting and not very pretty to me.
