coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 12/12/2006 11:32 pm The 8 digit appears to be flattened somewhat, likely because of something filling the digit in the die. The circular thing above the 8 appears to be a stain on the coin to me. I'm sure very close inspection will prove that circle thing to be flat to the surface of the coin. newdavid Valued Member United States 191 Posts	Posted 12/13/2006 08:25 am The area above the 8 does look a little raised to me. I am by no means an expert so please dont take this to heart. The other digits in the date seem to have a higher profile than the 8. All 4 pics that 8 seems to have something going on with it. Noticeable enough to cause some closer inspection. coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 12/13/2006 09:52 am It's just a stain...corrosion. As for the 8 of the date, it's not die wear. That would be evident all around the digits of the date as blurred outer edges and heavy die flow lines - neither are present. Your coin was struck when the 8 of the die was partially filled with something - grease, oil, something. I see this quite frequently on wheat cents. Report this Post to the Staff
