I understand why the 1909-s VDB commands such a high price. But why doesn't the 1931-s command a somewhat similarly high price? It has production of aprx. 1,000,000 less than 1909-s non-VDB, yet I usually see these two coins in similar condition selling for a similar price on the 'bay. (just over $100.00)

I understand it is a 20 year younger coin, but it's still a 80+ year old coin with only 866,000 minted.

From what I have heard, the news of the low mintage for the 1931-S got out and people hoarded them, which is why there is such a small difference in value in the higher circulated grades.

After people discovered the high value of early S mint cents, they were widely hoarded in mint state (and circulated condition) upon release. Out of the original mintage, many still exist today so we have a pretty good supply.
