Don't know when I got this, but looking through some coins today I came across this 1853 Large Cent. Looks like it is made of steel or a dark silver metal of some sort. I doesn't stick to a magnet. The reverse strike is off a perfect 180 degrees. Weighs 12.4 grams. Any one know what it is? I'm assuming just a crude copy of some sort?

Probably an old lead counterfeit, I'd wager. Is the metal soft enough to dent with your fingernail on the rim?

I think you are correct Steve. Just checked to see the softness of the metal and it feels like lead. I guess I should keep it out of my mouth then =)

Just when I thought it was a Dryer Coin. You know how rough that 1856-58 Kenmore dryer model could be on coins .
