I present the following 1878 Carson City Morgan that I recently purchased.

Now I am not sure what I wanted this so bad but I think this obtrusion was done at the mint. I look at the wing and the neck and it looks to be part of some type of striking error. Now, it might not be and one other thing I was looking at is that something could have stabbed the coin but it would have had to be hot, very hot to do so.

What do you think?

Sorry, it has to be post mint damage, It looks like an object was punched into the front at an angle that bulged the reverse. I don't see how it could have happened at the mint. It may have been somthing like a standard screwdriver and then whoever did it tried to close the entrance gash from above. It looks like there is some moved material on the cheek down towards the gash.

I just learned what PMD means and that is exactly what I was wondering. If it is PMD, does it ruin the value of the coin?

YES - Always. anywhere from 25% to more than 70% of the value is gone after PMD on most coins, some will still hold value, but those are coins so rare and old there are no other options for many collectors to own an example, like 1793 Chain Cents, Colonials, and other 1700's USA coins,I only collect and have knowledge of US coins but I'd bet the same goes to most world examples.

It would take away from it, but it should have value. There are plenty of low budget colletors out there who would buy it as a hole filler.

I Paid $85 for it....Maybe not such a good buy. Do you think I should return it to the seller. I mean part of me thought it could be an error and there was a picture so I guess it is partly my fault. Multiple folks were bidding on it so...

You can see where it's coming through on the obverse.
I agree, PMD.
If he/she had a return policy, I'd be sending it back.

With that lump on the reverse it will be very difficult to resell at a later date when you want to upgrade. I know a dealer who has this lightly cleaned VF-20 1878-CC for less than what you paid for your coin. It is a decent looking piece.

I'd return it... I know a dealer who has a low XF '78 CC for $75

I will wait until I get the coin. I knew it was there and the seller obviously was upfront about it. I will post actual pics when I get it. Good lesson for me no matter what happens.
