One must always suspect a US gold coin appearing overseas, but I am encouraged by the honest circulated look of this one and it shows none of the obvious signs of being counterfeit. FadeToBlack's opinion is based on the rim ding over the M in AMERICA, and it's quite likely he's right that it detracts from the coin's value. With that said, this is an issue which carries a nice premium over melt value, and even with that rim ding I would consider its' worth to approach US$500. However, that's a price you'll likely only realize if it is sold in a TPG slab.

Nothing throws red flags as to it's authenticity.
XF45 details is about right.
That's a long way from home!

The spacing between the CC seems a little off to me. I am no expert on gold by any means. I just used this coin as a reference.

For the record, Canadian-Banknotes, like most of my posts in unfamiliar territory I researched the specific issue before posting, and found examples of 1880-CC with similar mint mark placement. Not hard to believe, knowing that they were hand-punched during this era. It's one of the first things I check when considering a coin's authenticity - not a surefire confirmation but it at least eliminates some of the forms of counterfeits.
