2008 Nickel With Eye Problems - Coin Community Forum

Collector-Corner Pillar of the Community 872 Posts	Posted 10/31/2013 1:21 pm to me, it looks like there was a dumping of shavings on the planchet just prior to the strike. The coin is struck, and the lowest, deepest points of the die may have just barely struck the coin, and that little bit if separation may have caused what appears to be Machine Doubling or chatter in some areas. In any event, the small particles to me appear to be small die chips or filings, whatever you want to call them. Or it could simply be a clogged die as well, where the extra metal has filled certain areas of the die, and causes issues during the striking of coins. pyrbob Rest in Peace United States 1943 Posts	Posted 10/31/2013 2:41 pm The die was abraded (possibly to remove a clash). The deep area in the eyes are the high spots of the die that get polished away. Report this Post to the Staff
