One last question on this one: if I send it in to NGC, will they remove the little clumps of dirt visible in the fields? In a conservation effort? Or will they slab it 'as-is'?

Not worth a trip to a TPG in my opinion. If it's dirt, try to get it off with a tooth pick to see if it's easily removed. Don't get to crazy with it. I've had success this way before with dirt/crud.
