1992-D Frosty/White Nickel Plating. Copper Shows On Worn Part

Dr86 Valued Member United States 76 Posts	Posted 10/24/2015 1:06 pm I have a 1992 D nickel that has a frosty plating on it, it seems anti scratch resistant. In the front you can see where its coming off and I believe copper is beginning to show. Any ideas whats going on here? It is 4.91g Report this Post to the Staff

Dr86 Valued Member United States 76 Posts	Posted 10/24/2015 2:30 pm I know but this coin looks like it was replated just like 1943 steel cent. The color in comparison is much whiter. I'm curious what kind of environment would do this? Report this Post to the Staff
coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 10/24/2015 3:25 pm Not only discoloration, there was a finger print that probably started the avalanche on the obverse. The salts from the hands leave a residue that later eats into the finish. It is getting worse with age. Nothing will remove it without ruining the coin for collectability. Then you have a coin that has lost the natural surface and drops the value of the coin. Report this Post to the Staff
