Hi,

I'm glad I found this thread with a similar coin to mine. I therefore would want to request that the participants in this thread give their opinions on both the grade and variety (if applicable) for this 1885 India-British 1/4 Rupee. I think it could be a 'B' mint-mark but I do not know how to find this 'B' on this coin. Please assist me here.

The reason I also took a side cross sectional photo was to show that the obverse bust appears to be 'raised' up off of the field: instead of being incuse.

I am unsure of the terminology used here with respect to this 'raised' or 'incuse' bust coin but I do know that the 1885B is the only one with a 'raised' bust which means that it could be an expensive coin per the NGC World Coin pricing guide below:

I concur with your opinion. This site, http://jfcampbell.us/india/victoria/qrupee-mm.htm, is indispensable insofar as its usefulness in drilling down to the identity of my coin which did turn out to be a:

1/4 Rupee 1885B, raised mint mark, Type B Bust, Type I reverse with a 1,118,000 mintage.

Now with this verified information I can confidently state that the NGC retail values of $ 175.00 and $ 290.00 respectively for VF-20 and XF-40 accurately apply.

Without your assistance I would have had to settle for between a $ 40 - $ 50 retail resale price only because I would not have been able to substantiate the higher pricing structure.
