I like to get the proof quarters every year to see the new designs in person before I see them in circulation and to fully appreciate the design for what it is, but for bullion, like silver or gold eagles, I really think the uncirculated finish just looks better. You seem to lose a lot of the character of the precious metal when making a mirror finish, so the proofs just don't look as distinct or impressive for precious metal issues. I am about half-way through a proof set (minus gold) for 1883. It is a neat year because there are 3 different nickels, a 3 cent coin, and the Trade dollar. I almost bought a proof 1883 half at a show a couple weeks ago, but decided against it because it looked over dipped. I have an 1883 no cents proof nickel, unfortunately it's in a details holder. At one point I was thinking about making the ultimate 7070 of all proofs and started picking up random proof coins here and there.
