Let's face it, these three issues aren't necessarily tops on anyone's lists because none of them have any scarce keys. It's pretty easy to fill up a folder of regular circulation issues at minimal expense. (Contrast this with Lincoln cents and Washington quarters, which each have several key and semi-key dates.)

Despite this, do you have favorite dates that you find compelling for a specific reason?

Remember, I'm talking about regular circulation issues and not proofs or other strikes not meant for circulation.

One can still regularly find 1939 nickels in circulation in F or better. That's a winning design in my book. Plus, the war composition, key and semi-key dates, and full/partial/no steps keep the series numismatically interesting.

Kennedy halves are a close runner up; it's a very attractive coin in hand, but there aren't any real circulation keys (1999-P with 8 million) and they don't hold up in circulation, if they even make it that far.

Any variety of the 1982-P nickel.

Try finding nice fully struck and pristine examples! They are out there but it's hard to tell by looking for them.

Besides how amazing it was in 1975 to see a new reverse design on the JFK half (designs never changed back then and this was AMAZING at the time), there is no specific JFK half from circulation that I particularly gravitate towards. I also like like the DDOs and other anomalies on circulating JFKS. The 64, 72, 73, 74, & 77 DDOs are specific ones I enjoy (71s are not as pronounced).

Jefferson nickels would be my choice.

With some effort a BU/proof set can be put together
and not spend a fortune. Also this denomination can
have very nice looking toned coins. Blue, yellow, gold
purple and shades of grey are not unusual.

There are some better dates when your looking for
BU coins, for example 1939 D and 1942 D.

Some of my favorite looking coins are proof westward
journey nickels.

The Kennedy's are the hardest for me but the other two are considered 'key' due to limited mintage numbers.

I'm a big fan of Jefferson nickels, especially pre 1960 uncirculated and proofs up to 1964. To echo GR58, there are some real nice toners out there. To me, this is the most underrated series.

Silver Roosies.
Overlooked issue.
When the Mint FINALLY gets around to changing the coin's design LOTS of people are going to get caught short.

I'm with the Jeffersonians. Beside my lifelong Lincoln love, putting together a set of BU Jefferson nickels was my first serious attempt at collecting at the serious level. Although I've seen ads for complete AU sets for $395 etc., I couldn't do it the easy and more economical way. I did it piece by hard-won piece. It was a bit melancholy when I got that last glowing 1944-S!
