What do you think of proof coins? Do you bust sets open or leave them be?

I ignore proofs. I don't hate them; I'm just not interested in them. I look at them as a way the Mint has decided to make some money. I want coins that were MEANT to be circulated (business strikes).

I love 'em! After I buy my next major purchase (a $2.50 gold piece), I'm setting my sights on a proof Shield nickel (they are, surprisingly, REALLY cheap)!

I'm not a fan of proof coins. I have maybe 20 . I have never broken a proof set to get single coins. I love my circulated business strikes, they have history behind them.

Proofs are very pretty but most of them just do not scratch the itch. I have a few, mostly OGP sets and am considering doing a proof Sac set with the kid because they are a favorite.

I pretty much agree with kanga. I only have one proof set, the silver bicentennial set. Quote: I want coins that were MEANT to be circulated (business strikes).

I just walk past modern proofs without batting an eye at them, they are just overproduced collectibles. The mints truly make SO many of these today there isn't much special IMO. But I appreciate the beauty of the classic 19th century proofs, even though I rarely have the funds to pick one up.

I also ignore them. There is no thrill because there is no real hunt. Sometimes I look for years before I find a coin that fits the criteria I'm looking for. Proofs are made to be collected so their survival rate is very high, usually. Circulated old coins are what I like.

Love 'em! Old, new, Foreign, Domestic, I care not. I purchase ASE proofs when I can. Got a "snake privy" rev-proof Maple last year for peanuts. Received a clad-proof PCGS MS-69 JFK from my Secret Santa last year. Bought the 2007 proof set just for the Indiana quarter (Didn't bust it out). I've snagged 4-5 proof Statehood Quarters from circulation along w/ various cents & a rosie. If anyone feels differently (or are among those that release these guys to the wild)... feel free to send 'em my way! They will always have a home in my safe.

I like them. The annual proof sets are busted and the coins placed in the appropriate Dansco album. But I should also mention that I prefer circulated to uncirculated, so that makes me odd.

I like circulated coins but love to look at classic proofs (I can't afford them). I have a few modern proof sets and have bought birth year sets for my son, niece, and nephew. I also have bought proof sets as gifts for foreign friends. They are a neat keepsake from the States.

Quote: But I should also mention that I prefer circulated to uncirculated, so that makes me odd. No, just a wise choice that keeps your costs down.

Well, I was thinking it odd since I like to collect proof as well.

I don't care for proof all that much. Only buy them because they are required for the Dansco albums. I don't have Proof Sets that I keep just for the set. Except for 1968-1998 I have just in case I ever start a new group of series so I can have fun busting them up.
Some weird internal tic in me makes it so I can only handle proofs next to uncirculated. I can't put circulated and proof in the same album. So if my series is circulated-- I only buy the P & D Dansco. If my series is uncirculated, I buy the P & D and Proof Dansco.

I always find humour on ebay. Many listings refer to proof coins as "proof condition". Proof is NOT a condition, it's a finish. Geesh!
