What would cause the wood grain appearance on this PL small cent? I have never saw one this way. I just took it out of 2000 Uncirculated SE set

being that this is a plated coin, I would guess either a planchet flaw, or a plating issue.

Here's the same thing from 1999. I was told that it's common and not collectable but I really like them and think it would be cool to have one from each year.

A while back I posted this penny:

The expert opinions said it was a lacquered penny. Apparently the mint lacquered pennies to keep their luster in mint sets. So I am wondering if this is the case with your coin?

I've seen quite a few of them most with varying degrees of detail in the ripples. I have some put away here somewhere.
