hockingzig Pillar of the Community United States 1450 Posts	Posted 08/16/2008 6:09 pm I know it means brilliant uncirculated but where does it fall in relation to AU and MS grades? Is it a catch-all term before actually grading a coin or what does it really signify? Am I opening another huge can of worms here? Report this Post to the Staff

tights24 Pillar of the Community United States 2254 Posts	Posted 08/16/2008 6:15 pm I can't remember the exact order, but I think it goes something like: BU = MS60-63 Gem BU = MS64-65 Superb Gem BU = MS66+ Or something of that nature. I believe they used this term for bulk submissions of coins at one point, and I think you will see NGC using this method. I don't know that's it's currently still being practiced though. Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6398 Posts	Posted 08/16/2008 9:41 pm When you buy a "BU" coin from many dealers, including big advertisers in the national magazines, you are lucky if you get a no-problem MS-60. More frequently you will receive an AU-50 to AU-55 "slider" with cleaning or other problems. Some reputable dealers call a coin BU if it grades MS-60 to MS-62. Choice unc will be MS-63 to MS-64, and gem is MS-65. I've purchased raw coins from Stacks auction house. A quarter that they graded Choice BU was slabbed at MS-65 at PCGS. A Morgan dollar called Gem BU also got an MS-65 from PCGS. A $10 Indian gold piece they called BU (no Choice, no Gem) graded AU-58 at ICG. Report this Post to the Staff
